Finding Purpose In Life

Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself. George Bernard Shaw

Creating a life to love after your love one makes their life transition can be difficult to achieve, but it is critical to our own health quote-about-love-is-an-unconditional-commitmentand well-being.  Sure, our fond memories of the love we shared linger on in our hearts, but we have to find a way to move on, find purpose, and create a new life to love.

Finding purpose in life is one of the critical components enhancing our happiness.  Happiness is not predicated on having the biggest car, fancy house, or the most money in the bank.  Happiness is predicated on finding purpose in life.

“There is one aspect of grief that I think all of us will experience in one way or another.  We stop living!  Once you come to the realization that you have stopped living, then you realize the time has come to move on and live your life in the present, with health, happiness and confidence…  Like a plant that needs to be watered to regain blooms, we too, in our grief process, need to be watered so we can bloom again.  There is no timetable for a new bloom, but without the proper nurturing and care, our soil will become dry and we start to wither away” (p. 95).

In order to live again, we have to find purpose in our life while living in the present with health, happiness and confidence.  That is why it was important for me to write “What’s The Deal With Caregiving”  in order to give back to the vast community of family Caregivers across the nation. Because it is through giving back where we find purpose and meaning in life.

Re-Branding The Purple Jacket?

The starting point of all achievement is desire.  Napoleon Hill

I often get asked; ‘Why did you name your blog, ‘The Purple Jacket?’  The short answer is the symbolism of ‘The Purple Jacket’ is about life changing events and how life changing events can affect our life.  My life changing events happened around weight loss, weight gain and then around Caregiving. Yes, I actually do

The Purple Jacket

Yes, there is a Purple Jacket; circa 2006

own a Purple Jacket, and for quite some time now, the purple jacket has been about the only thing in my life which as stayed in the closet!

cjm-big (2)

Yep, that’s me in 2002

When I purchased The Purple Jacket in 2005, I had just lost 85 lbs over a two-year period.  Purchasing that jacket was out of character for me, not only was  it an expensive, spur of the moment purchase, there was nothing in my wardrobe which even  came close to looking like this jacket.  Wearing that jacket as a life changing experience: I just loved wearing that purple jacket on special occasions!

Before Richard made his life transition in March, he made me promise him that I would take better care of myself.  I am really 10401392_10152689856867819_6644878810826409650_ntrying to take better care of myself,  however some days are better than others.  Like many of us do, I deal with stress by eating.  Sure, I’ve tried a diet here a diet there.  I’ve been on the bike and on the walking path, each time I tried, that little voice in the back of my head seem to take control.

As I create a new path in life,  I wonder if it is not time to re-brand the blog? Re-branding the blog does not mean that I will give up on wearing the Purple Jacket, but in order to wear that jacket again, I wonder if it is not time to create some ‘Healing Ties’ in order to do so?

So as my faithful readers to the Purple Jacket, and listeners to my new radio show, ‘Healing Ties’ if you could answer some quick questions in our poll about re-branding ‘The Purple Jacket’ to ‘Healing Ties’ I would be most appreciative.

The Second Time Around

The only source of knowledge is  experience ~ Albert Einstein

supportIt has taken me a couple of days to wrap myself around the fact that TLO started Adult Day Care this week.  We have chatted about this option for a number of weeks, but to have this day come to  reality, really hit home for both of us on Tuesday when we got in the car and motored our way down to the Noble A. McArtor Adult Day Care Center.

Herman1(1)

Herman and TLO; Circa 1998

We both have had  previous experienced Adult Day Care, so we were coming from the knowledge of experience, yet that knowledge was just about to turn into our reality as we headed south on highway 95.  “Herman wouldn’t go to Day Care; I finally asked him to at least go for a week, to test it out, to give it a try, to at least help me out” TLO said!  “I guess that is exactly what we are doing today, too!” I responded!   (It has to be that knowledge and experience thing!)

TLODaycare

TLO and Michael Norfleet, Agency Director

As we arrived at the center, we were greeted warmly by the staff and the participants.  It wasn’t too long before the agency’s director, Michael Norfleet came to meet us, we chatted for a bit and then before I knew it, they were both sitting in the lounge chairs, chatting up a storm.  It was then that I knew that the day was on…and time for me to make my quick exit! It was also then when they day actually hit me square in the eye and I started to cry.

I have no doubt that the McArtor Center is the best place for both of us. Established in 2004, The McArtor Center focus is to meet the needs of the LGBT community Noble_McArtor_logo2_140in Broward County, Florida and the center is the first of its kind! In the LGBT community, many seniors in need of daytime or respite care have no option but to attend day care programs that are not open to, and understanding of the special relationships and needs of gay and lesbian seniors. The Noble A. McArtor Center was founded by an extraordinary team of individuals whose vision created a safe, open and home-like atmosphere for all seniors and their caregivers to enjoy, regardless, and supportive of any sexual orientation or identification, race, age, gender, religion or economic level.

Fr Orlando celebrates his 58th anniversary of his ordination at the Center 2005. Helen and Sonia remain good friends of mine today!

Yet, there is more to the history… More to the knowledge… More to our experience… And more to our story!   Father Orlando’s was one of the first participants to attend the McArtor Center in 2004.  Upon his arrival in Florida in July of 2004, we both agreed that we would need Day Care to help us manage our days. I was a very ‘green’ Caregiver at that time! I remember coming across the center in a newspaper article and was hooked on the first visit. Then I remember what Fr. Orlando said to me on our first day…”I’ll give it a try for a few days to see how I like it!”  Whew, did that sound familiar!

Valentine_Kids_QuoteHe, well…we…never regretted one day of our stay at the center and in fact, the socialization and positive attention that Fr. Orlando received  at the center, revived his life and his ministry, which aided him (and me) when he made his peaceful life transition in 2006.   Now looking back almost 10 years, it is amazing to have come full cycle and return to the center.  The staff is different, the participants are different, but there is one thing that is the same, unconditional love!

Of course, I don’t know what the future holds for us. Now two plus weeks past his radiation treatments, TLO is slowly starting the healing process.  It is going to be an uphill struggle. My guess is that the healing process is only going to be aided by the unconditional love demonstrated to us by the staff at the Noble A. McArtor Adult Day Care Center because as Albert Einstein said: “the only source of knowledge is experience! “

You see…We Might Have Cancer, But Cancer Does Not Have Us!

Positive Thoughts Helps Ease The Diagnosis

Today we had our second visit to the radiation oncologist to secure images on TLO’s spine in order to determine the course of action for the upcoming radiation treatments. We were so pleased by the experience we had today because of the care and concern showed to us by the technician who was taking the images.

20131015-222438.jpg

Luis was a class act today. He took the time to thoroughly explain to us the procedure, what to expect and when we would know of the results. He listened attentive to our questions and made us both feel at ease. But I think what set the positive tone off was the way he greeted us in the waiting room. He went right over to TLO, extended his hand and introduced himself, then turned to me with the same warm welcome!

His approach was truly an ice breaker!

20131015-222947.jpg

Luis’ style today was not only professional and friendly, it was therapeutic! His demeanor today completely put TLO at ease, which has lasted the rest of the day.

“I really feel good today” said TLO after dinner this evening. “Was my cooking that great tonight I asked?” “Don’t kid yourself” he said. “I really came away from our appointment today feeling good about the how I was treated and the whole environment of the office. Luis was so nice to me and listened, that does not always happen in these settings. I am so glad that we are going to this office for treatments, I feel safe, secure and appreciated!”

I agree with him 100%!

20131015-224223.jpg

As the night has progressed, TLO is resting comfortably and we are both at peace thanks to Luis’ excellent care today. We don’t look at the future as being bleak, we look at each day as a blessing to share with each other, to care for each other and to be open to the days ahead.

We’ve had our cries; we’ve had our frustration and now we just deal with the reality of what is in front of us. One simple act of kindness by Luis today help alleviate 10 days worth of fear and frustration. Our hats are off to Luis!
