VRide Week 2 Update

Second VRide Weight In Sunday January 27th

We are now into week two of our VRide to promote Caregivers Health. This week I logged over 50 miles on the Stationary Bike and over 15 miles in walking distance. Every Sunday, I ‘Weigh In’ and today after one week of activity, I am 6 lbs down.

During the first week of any exercise or weight management plan, it is not uncommon to lose more weight that is expected.  Health experts estimate that healthy weight lose is 2 lbs per week.  While I continue to be diligent with my diet and exercise routine this week, I don’t expect to lose 6 lbs every week.

Check out all our #VRide participants at Caregiving.com

Continue to follow my progress here at ‘The Purple Jacket.”

End Of Life Wishes: Sometimes You Just Have To Ask.

On Saturday,  Richard and I were guest on ‘Your Caregiving Journey’ hosted by Denise Brown from Caregiving.com You can listen to the show by simply clicking here.

Our conversation today came out of a discussion that Denise and I had a couple of weeks ago about a decision I made to withhold information from Richard after he completed his radiation and chemotherapy treatments where the oncologist estimated that he had 3 to 4 months to live.    We also talked about a variety of other  end of life topics that are often difficult to discuss, yet important to get out in the open.

Having a discussion with your partner or caree on such a sensitive topic can be difficult, but so essential in order to Be A Healthy Caregiver.

During our discussion, Richard spoke about his desires when his pain becomes too great, 20111225-083619.jpgdescribed what a good day feels like and shared what he whats from me as his partner and caregiver on a daily basis. Sometimes it is a simple as…’When something is wrong with me, you will be the first to know, until then, just let me be!

Denise and I talked about the challenge of letting go of my own beliefs and emotions when it comes to Richard’s  wishes.  As I mentioned on the show, Richard and I come for different faith traditions which has  different perspectives and philosophies when it comes to end of life hands touchgindecisions. However as his partner and his caregiver, it is essential for me to put aside my own personal beliefs so that I can honor what Richard wants.

As Caregivers and life partners, we often forget that we are not the ones who are sick.  While we share in our care and concern for each other, when it comes to these critical issues, it is important to follow the wishes of the one who is ill.

End of life discussions are never easy to have.  Richard and I have both buried our partners and while we both have previous experience in this subject, it does not make it any easier. We just know that we have to have this discussion.

Find a way to have that end-of-life discussion…

Below are some great example of how to start this conversation along with some great questions to to get the conversation going provided by Denise Brown at Caregiving.com

“If you feel uncomfortable, simply say, “I’m uncomfortable with what I’m about to ask, but I’ve been giving some thought to your last months. I want to make sure I understand what you what and need. Would you be up to having a discussion?” And then go from there. The discussion is a process which means you might continue the conversation over several days and weeks and month. And, as your caree’s health changes, you’ll want to revisit the discussion to ensure your caree’s wishes haven’t changed.”

These questions can help during your discussion:

1. How do you want to spend your last months and weeks and days?

2. What do you want from me during your last months?

3. What’s a good day like for you? (This is a good question to ask regularly as the definition of a “good day” will change.)

4. Do you have any unfinished business you’d like to finish?

5. How do you feel about dying? What do you think happens after we die?

If you haven’t visited Denise Brown at Caregiving.com now is the time to do so.  Richard and I consider Denise and all the members of Caregiving.com as our extended family.   Denise is a true leader in the Caregiving community.

82: Who Would Have Known?

Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies.  Aristotle

026Today, ‘The Little One’ turns 82! It is a feat to recognize considering we are now 16 months past the oncologist‘s original  estimation of 3-4 months to live after the completion of his radiation and chemotherapy treatments in October of 2011.      We all know that Cancer is an insidious disease, unpredictable and unkind to many.  While we feel blessed to have the extended time together,  we are cognizant of all  cancer victims and their families today.

We learned from our oncologist prediction in October of 2111 that there is really no one who can tell us how this ordeal was going to play out.  There are no timetables in life:  what is here today, is gone tomorrow.  Knowing full well that I am not the one with cancer, I had to learn my supporting role as the caregiver as time played out.  Remembering ‘TLO’ determination and commitment to ‘fight this as best I can’ still rings in my ears from October 2011.  His determination is still prevalent today!

I have never liked phrase ‘terminal illness‘ …some people view life as a terminal illness.  Yikes, how sad that is!   TheWorry TLO and I have both buried our previous partners, in one sense that is what drew us together.  Our previous Caregiving experiences give us the foresight to know that…we really don’t know what is going to happen.  The best we can do is be present in the day.  That is why is it our hope that lets us withstand problems, and it is our dreams that lets us find solutions.

We celebrate birthdays as milestones, and today is a special milestone for ‘TLO’.  Happy Birthday to my best friend, pal and partner.   May your hills always have a gentle wind at your back.

Eat Less: Move More

BHC_fb

One of the main components to losing weight is a simple theme that I like to follow…Eat Less:Move More!  There are quite a bit of diets out there for us to follow, believe me, I’ve tried a lot of them.  But all diets come back to one thing…Eat Less: Move More!   Another trick I learned years ago was to use smaller plates.  This morning I made a two egg omelet with spinach and used a small plate which made my portions look enormous.

Bfast 001

Sometimes weight loss and exercise is just an exercise in changing one’s mindset.  Just like changing the size of my breakfast plate gave me the illusion that I was eating more, when I was actually eating less.

Deep down inside, I think we all know what we need to do in order to take the weight off.  Lots of times it just comes down to changing our mindset and being around people who are supportive.

That is why our #VRide is so good for so many people.  We can work at our own pace and receive all the encouragement that each one of us needs in order to feel comfortable and…affirmed!

Today I walked 3 miles and rode the stationary bike for 15 miles…It feels good to take care of myself!

Challenges of caregiving ‘weigh’ on Chris MacLellan

BHC_fb

I would like to thank Florida Blue for this article which was published on their website today.

Chris MacLellan is among the estimated 65.7 million caregivers in the U.S., so he has a lot of people who can understand the challenges of caring for a loved one. However, sometimes he’s felt completely alone.

“Just as the caree needs support, caregivers need their own support system to help them get through the ups and downs of the caregiving experience,” said Chris. “I found out that if I can’t take care of myself, how can I take care of my partner?”

Research tells us that caregiving can have serious physical health consequences. In fact, 17% of caregivers feel their health in general has gotten worse as a result of their caregiving responsibilities.*

Chris knows all about the toll that caregiving can inflict upon his own health. In past years, he has cared for a close friend and he now cares for his partner, who was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2011. He describes these experiences as “life changing.”

But what also changed during these experiences was his weight. While he cared for others, he struggled with using food as comfort instead of fuel. At one point in Chris’ life he weighed almost 300 lbs. – and he knew he was at a breaking point. Through diligent efforts, he lost 100 lbs. and continues the battle to keep it off. However, due to the recent stress of his partner’s diagnosis and subsequent caregiving duties, his weight has started to rise once again.

“I knew I had to make a permanent change in my weight,” he said. “If I am to be a healthy caregiver, I have to take better care of myself.”

Chris now is a big believer in caregivers taking care of their physical and mental health. He also realizes that like him, other caregivers often put their own personal needs second, which often turns into weight gain or other health problems..

In February of 2011, he began writing a blog to share his caregiving story and

create awareness. Today, an interactive online community of caregivers also thrives as a result of his outreach. He calls his blog The Purple Jacket, where you’ll find his passion for caregiving, personal experiences and struggles, and advocacy efforts. Plus, the blog has blossomed into a full-scale resource for caregivers with a focus on the specific challenges of the LGBT community.

Chris also hosts Be a Healthy Caregiver on BlogTalkRadio and you’ll find his helpful tips, words of encouragement and retweets @TheBowTieGuy.

“I am a communicator, not a clinician,” Chris says. “My passion for increasing awareness about caregiving has been my mental therapy, of sorts. Sharing my life has helped others…and me, too.”

So, after all, Chris is not alone.

Take a virtual ride with Chris

On January 20th, Chris will kick off a virtual ride, tweeting from his stationary bike about improving his personal health while continuing to raise awareness for fellow caregivers. His goal to lose weight is teamed with reaching other caregivers to motivate them to focus on their own health. Florida Blue will follow Chris’s ride on Twitter, so be sure to help us cheer him on!

We understand the importance of making your health a priority, especially if you’re a caregiver. To help you make the difficult decision to focus on your own health, we invite you to stop by one of our Florida Blue Centers, where one of our staff nurses will speak with you about your personal health challenges. You can even get a your blood pressure checked, have a cholesterol and blood glucose screening, check your height and weight, and more.

And, don’t forget to visit Staying Healthy on floridablue.com for great tips and guidance.

Be sure to tell us about your caregiving experiences, below. We want you to know you are not alone…

Caregivers: It’s Time To Get Healthy with ‘VRide’

BHC_fb

We do not have to do it alone!

What is a V-Ride you might ask?  V-Ride stand for Virtual Ride, or better yet a fancy word for a ride on a stationary bike!    I am teaming up with my friends at Caregiving.com  to create awareness to caregivers health.

130116-fitpass-vride-postcard-florida2 (1)

Caregivers often put  own personal needs second, which often turns into weight gain or other calamities which can affect one’s health.   I’ve been there!

Get_Healthy

As Caregivers, we are united in our care for our caree, now through our VRide we can unite in care for ourselves.  The great thing about the VRide is that anyone can do it.  VRide is about getting fit, staying motivated and making virtual visits to other family caregivers. My first destination is to ‘visit’ another caregiver in the Orlando area.  In fact my riding partner on the west coast of Florida ‘will meet me there.’  Once we’ve made it to our destination, we’ll visit another caregiver in another state.  We’ll make stops along the way and chart our progress on a daily basis.

Here is a map of my route to Orlando…

Deerfield Beach, FL to Orlando, FL - Google Maps 1

I have just a tad over 200 miles to pedal to ‘get’ to Orlando, it will be a daunting ride, but one that will be healthy for me. Our ‘V’ Ride allows caregivers the comfort of exercising in the comfort of their own home without the worry of leaving their caree behind. This is a win/win for everyone.

You can follow my progress here on ‘The Purple Jacket’ and on Caregiving.com   There will be updates on Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, too.

Thre is an  estimated 65.7 million caregivers in the U.S; Research tells us that Caregiving can have serious physical health consequences. In fact, 17% of caregivers feel their health in general has gotten worse as a result of their Caregiving responsibilities.  I have allowed my weight to balloon up to 253 lbs, a mere  73 lbs off my target weight.

I know most of the weight I have put on is  because of the stress of Caregiving, yet I also have to take personal responsibility too.  If I am to Be A Healthy Caregiver, I have to take better care of myself, too.  The VRide is one way that I can give back to others while helping myself.

Want to join us? Great! Just start moving and post your daily activity in our VRide group. We’ll add events to our group’s calendar when we know the dates of a virtual stop and a caregiving visit.  To join our group and blog, you must be a member of Caregiving.com. From one of the best caregiving blogs on the internet…Enjoy!

ijwoods's avatarConscious Departures

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWell, I’ve taken quite a bit of time off to regroup, enjoy the holiday and make some great connections.  But I’m feeling more strongly than ever to get the word out to friends and acquaintances about being ahead of the curve on end-of-life and caregiving issues, so it’s time to get back to writing. It may not be practical for some to get too far ahead of the curve, but many people are surprised how quickly they get blindsided finding themselves as a caregiver or being cared for. Almost everyone I’ve spoken with over the holidays is gravitating towards or in the middle of some kind of family caregiving situation. In my own experience, even with adequate time to get well informed,  I still found myself with many seemingly small tasks that were far more worrisome than I anticipated.

One day it reached the point, in K’s cancer evolution, that she needed…
