You’ll Be Okay!

Love is when the other person’s happiness is more important that your own ~ H. Jackson Brown, Jr

Earlier this month, I was asked by my good friend Denise Brown from Caregiving.com and AfterGiving.com  to share a video for today’s family caregivers that comforts with three words: You’ll be okay.

While creating this video, I learned that I  was comforted, knowing that by sharing my after caregiving journey might help someone else, just like me,  who is also in the grieving and healing process.

Loss is so personal, so real.  No one can really tell us how to deal with the loss of a loved one, yet that old cliché, ‘time does heals all wounds’  is true! However wounds heal at their own pace and in their own time, and in your time…you’ll be Okay…. because it does get better!

Progressive Holiday Blog Party with Caregiving.com

Caregiving_Logo_Small1 2013_blog_party-300x199Welcome to the Progressive Holiday Blog Party 2013

Greetings!  ‘The Purple Jacket’ pleased to join the 2013 Progressive Holiday Blog Party with the wonderful members of Caregiving.com.  The Community at Caregiving.com  is like having an extended family;  I am proud to be a part of this wonderful group!

TLO_Certificate

I graduated from radiation!

For those first time visitors to ‘The Purple Jacket’ welcome and Thank You for stopping by!  I blog about my Caregiving experience for my partner, who I loving refer to as ‘The Little One.’  He was diagnosed with esophagus cancer in August of 2011.  Given three to four months to live, he has outlived all predictions.   Yet in October of 2013, Cancer has returned to ‘The Little One’ with a vengeance as he was diagnosed with Cancer on the spine.  With three tumors on his spine; ‘The Little One’ just recently completed 30 radiation treatments.  For the most part, he is pain-free at the moment, my that continue!

While each one of us deals with the reality of cancer in a different way, each 20131015-225104.jpgone of us wants to look on the bright side of life. Yesterday is gone, today is here, not sure about tomorrow. It is our hope that lets us withstand problems; it is our beliefs that let us find solutions.

I have been blogging here and at Caregiving.com for almost two years now.  The Caregivers I have met along the way have become a part of our family.   While our Caregiving journey’s might be different, Caregivers have this innate ability to understand each other, to be there for each other, to care for each other.

Things that I am looking forward to in 2014:

My Blog Talk Radio Show, ‘Be A Healthy Caregiver’  has been on hiatus since October, but will be back on the air in January with a new title, ‘Healing Ties.’  You can visit my Blog Talk Radio page and listen to archived versions of the show by clicking here!

I will be (returning) to studying Theology at St. Joseph’s College in Standish, Maine with the intent to finish my Thesis, ‘The Social Sin of Geriatric Care in America.”

I hope we do another CareCruise in 2014!

To learn more about me,  I invite you to visit my ‘about page’ on my website by clicking here.

That’s What Caregivers Do!

Presidential Proclamation — November is National Family Caregivers Month!

I am proud to be one of the over 60 million Caregivers in the United States today.  Being a Caregiver can be, and often is challenging… But also so very  rewarding.  I believe that to be entrusted with the care of another human being is one of the greatest honors that can be bestowed on another person.  Those long sleepless nights, those challenging trips to the doctor and hospitals, those times when you have to intercede, educated and advocate come full circle when your Caree looks at you and  simply says…”Thank You for what you do for me.”

I am also mindful of those family Caregivers who are never thanked, never appreciated and overworked.  If it means anything to you, from one Caregiver to another, I offer my thanks and appreciation to you because… That’s what Caregivers do!

Caregiving is not a role that is often chosen and Caregiving is not for everyone.  Caregivers come in many different shapes, sizes, philosophies and cultures:  Caregiving and Caregivers are diverse. While our Caregiving  journeys might be different, Caregivers have this innate ability to understand each other,  to care for each other, to be there for each other, because…  That’s What Caregivers do!

Through the wonders of the internet, my Caregiving journey has been enriched by the countless number of people I have met along the way.  Each one of you have inspired me, supported me and have been there for me because… That’s what Caregivers do!

A special ‘thank you’ to Author, Caregiving Coach, Speaker and owner at Caregiving.com Denise Brown and my extended family at  Caregiving.com  for your support. You opened up your ‘home’ to us and made us feel welcome from the start because…  That’s what Caregivers do!

We know that our current Caregiving journey is going to be filled with a few bumps and bruises along the way; Cancer has a way of doing that.  Yet we know those bumps and bruises will be a tad softer because of our extended Caregiving family we’ve met along the way because…That’s what Caregivers do!.

TLO

Caregivers: Thank You for all you do from Bernard Richard Schiffer…’The Little One’

To all Caregivers, I share this simple smile from a very special fellow whose courage is unbounded, as a way of thanking you for all that you do, because…That’s what Caregivers do!

Tumors Have No Boundaries

BHC_fb

One of the insidious parts of (most) cancer is that it is often sight unseen. Sure, the naked eye can see the wear and tear that chemotherapy andeyecheck radiation takes on the body, but those nasty tumors live rebelliously inside one’s body without a hint of what they might do next.

We are in the midst of experiencing the rebellious side of that nasty tumor that sits inside The Little One’s body. Not knowing what it is going to do next, the tumor has decided to showvirius its ugly head at night when you least expect it. “I can’t lay on my side, it’s too painful” he said…”What do you think is causing the pain” I asked…”Heaven only knows” he said…”But I can’t sleep laying down, I am so worn out from all of this,” he said!

Amen to that!

While we are grateful for the good health that The Little One has had since his diagnoses and subsequent treatment in 2011, however it has occurred to me that this unwelcome visitor to his body has no boundaries! We are always talking about setting boundaries in our life, yet this tumor has a mind of its own. It is as rebellions as a teenager. It wake when it wants to and does what it pleases; what an unwelcome guest!

Resting peacefully this afternoon after a trip to the Primary Care Physician today, The Little One takes these bumps in the road with utter peace and calm. I cannot photo (2)say that has been true for me today. He deals with the pain; I want to take it away. He is realistic; I am pessimistic. I want to help, but what can I do other than offer care and comfort? There is no bandage to apply, there is no fever to check, and there are no other signs of him needing help. That is one of the craziest parts in this process, and that is exactly what this is… a process!

Seeing is always believing?

Sure, the next new pill we will be trying this evening might put a fence around the tumor in hopes that it will limit its boundaries. However, I would prefer023 to goon it up with a crosscheck and a boarding penalty in order to enact some revenge on something that I cannot see. (Thank Goodness hockey season is upon us!) While with both know the reality of his cancer, we are both aware of the uncertainty with his cancer as well: what a paradox!

The most important thing that I learned today as we traveled together on another part of our Caregiving Journey is that I have to be there to be supportive, to share information, to advocate for the one I care for, and the one that I love. Caregiving was never meant to be easy, but we can make it easier on ourselves by talking about our fears, by being present to our needs, while being an advocate for the one we care. Thankful for the support at work, family and friends across the country and especially my extended family at Caregiving.com for checking in on us today!

Even though the insidious tumor may not want to set boundaries, we can stifle the tumor control over us by simply being realistic and present to each other. Easier said than done, yet possible because you see… We Might Have Cancer, But Cancer Does Not Have Us!

Happy Birthday Caregiving.com!

Caregiving_Logo1-e1365364386562

DeniseBrown

Denise Brown, Caregiving.com

It is not often someone get’s to celebrate a 17th birthday twice, but that is what is going on today with Denise Brown at Caregiving.com! Denise registered CareGiving.com seventeen years ago on August 3rd; Denise and her website continue to offer soothing support, wonderful direction for a host of family Caregivers that instantly become your extended family.  Denise has been a mentor to many Caregivers and always, I MEAN ALWAYS, is there to lend her support, wisdom and care.

There are an estimated 66 million family caregivers just in the United States.  Caregiving is about collaboration, not about competition. Each family Caregiver has their own Caregiving journey story to tell, yet it is through those stories where Caregivers connect with each other, understand each other, are there for each other.  Denise Brown and Caregiving.com is a perfect example of this philosophy.

Take the time to visit Denise at Caregiving.com by simply clicking here! You’ll find Denise as an author, keynote speaker, radio show host and a friend to many.  But what you will really find without evening knowing it, is that gentle  guide and support that every caregiver needs while on their journey from someone who really does care.

I found Caregiving.com two years ago when I started to write about my Caregiving Journey and have not looked back since.  Denise has encouraged me to find my voice through blogging, and my weekly radio show; my life has been changed for the better by Denise and my extended family of Caregivers on Caregiving.com   Your life will be changed too by visiting Caregiving.com!  Stop by today or anytime this week and wish  Denise another 17th birthday and see what she has in store for everyone during her birthday celebration!

Caregivers: Avoiding Self-Pity

be-healthyLet’s face it, sometimes Caregiving can be hard.  We do what we can and we forge ahead, sometimes it is simply mind over matter.  Eleanor Roosevelt once said, ‘With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts.’  I believe that her quote can be a motto for every family caregiver!

Eleanor Roosevelt: political activist, First L...

Eleanor Roosevelt:  (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I thought about Eleanor Roosevelt’s quote today after having a conversation with another family caregiver who asked me  how I avoid self-pity when in the midst of Caregiving.    His question forced me to look (hard) at my role as a Caregiver and the times when I fell into the trap of self-pity.    I concluded that (my) self-pity  comes out in  negative comments or better yet, (actually worse yet!) negative non-verbals.   When we are in the midst of Caregiving, it is easy to fall into those negative traps.   This conversation today reminded me of one very simple statement  that ‘TLO’ taught me from his Caregiving experience with his partner Herman.   ‘Remember, it’s the disease talking, not the person!’  Wow!  Learning from your caree is one of the greatest gifts we can receive as a caregiver!   The conversation also served as a gentle reminder to me that when those late night Caregiving duties arrive, as hard as they might be, they are not planned, they just happen.  (It’s the disease talking, duh!)

As Caregivers, we can lose a sense of self in our role as a Caregiver.   Avoiding self-pity can be as simple as finding a way to turn a negative into a positive.  Some other tips that I have found helpful along the Caregiving Journey  are:

  •  Share your story with other Caregivers
  • Join a support group ( I recommend Caregiving.com)
  • Journal or Blog about your experience
  • Block out time for yourself, even if it’s just 5 minutes
  • Remember, “It’s the disease talking, not your caree!
  • Reach Out for Help, it’s a sign of strength not weakness
  • Be kind to yourself!

Self-pity only makes the Caregiving experience more difficult; I am thankful that I had a friend today who was willing to challenge his own Caregiving issues, while in turn, helping me with my Caregiving issues too!  Eleanor Roosevelt had it right…’With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts.’

You see, we might have Cancer;

But Cancer does not have us!
