Caregivers: What’s Your Hobby?

BHC_fb

‘There is nothing deep down inside us except what we have put there ourselves.”  Richard Rorty

Tuesday  on ‘Be A Healthy Caregiver’ on Blog Talk Radio, I had the pleasure of visiting with John Schwaig from Fabrication Arts Studio in St. Louis.  When I posted that John was going to be on the show, I had a couple of people ask me, “how are you going to relate Stained Glass Art to Caregiving?” My response was simple,  the show is about the importance of Caregivers having a hobby!  To listen to this episode of ‘Be A Healthy Caregiver with John Schwaig, simply click here!

hat hobbies

During the show, John talked about how his workshops and  classes in stained glass  have attracted cancer patients and their Caregivers, and how time spent in working on a stained art project have allowed them to take their mind from daily grind of dealing with health issues.  As a former counselor and teacher, John is keenly aware of the importance of self-care.

With over 66 million working Caregivers in the United States today, finding  time for a hobby, or better yet, self-care is often difficult for Caregivers.  Dedicated to the care and well-being of our Caree, Caregivers often put their needs second, which can lead to lack of quality rest,  poor eating habits, which of course then leads to poor health.

Here are some tips for Family Caregivers

  • Schedule Time For Yourself
  • Take Up A Hobby
  • Join A Support Group (I recommend Caregiving.com)
  • Take Care Of Your Own Health
  • Learn To Put Yourself First
  • Meditate
  • Read a Book Not Related to Caregiving
  • Be Open to Outside Help

Self-Care is an important part of the entire Caregiving process that is often left unattended.  I know, I’ve been there myself!  But with some simple adjustments to our daily routine, we can find the time to take better care of ourself.  The ‘funny’ thing about this…your Caree will be the one who will be most appreciative of you taking better care of yourself!

I would like to hear from you on what you do for a hobby!

A Conversation on Home Health Care

BHC_fb

On Tuesday’s episode of ‘Be A Healthy Caregiver on Blog Talk Radio, I had the pleasure of visiting with Ernst Olivas Nautilusfrom Nautilus Senior Home Care, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Selecting a Home Health Care agency is a critical decision for any Caregiver and their Caree.  Many States are now regulating Home Health Care agencies to assure that proper guidelines are being followed, especially when it relates to hiring competent and qualified staff.   During the conversation with Ernst, I appreciated how he goes the extra mile to ensure his staff is properly trained and placed with family caregivers accordingly.

caring-for-caregiver

As Caregivers, we often want to do it ourselves and sometimes giving up control can be difficult.  Yet Home Health Care can provide family Caregivers, and their Caree, with the needed respite care that is critical, so that everyone can ‘Be A Healthy Caregiver.’

When considering a Home Health Care Agency, here are some simple questions to ask when interviewing an Agency:

  • Does the Agency offer a Patients Bill of Rights:
  • What are the screening and hiring policies of the agency:
  • What are the training policies of the agency:
  • How does the agency handle employees who do not report for their shift/what are the backup plans:
  • How does the agency ensure patient confidentiality:
  • What are your fees/ hourly/ daily/ overnight:
  • How closely does the supervisors work with the staff to ensure quality care:
  • Is the agency licensed:

Caregiving and Those Silly Hats

be-healthy

I will be the first to admit that I have hit a dry spell recently in my writing.  When chatting with other bloggers about this, I have learned that hitting a dry spell, or ‘The Wall’ as it has been described to me, is not uncommon.  When you are a working family caregiver, there is often this tug of war between what you want to do,  versus what you have time to do, coupled with the fact of what you have to do.   No matter what role you might have in life, finding that  balancing act is always a challenge.

A great example of finding that balancing act in life happened this past weekend at a fundraising event for work.   While I always like to include ‘The Little One’ in on as many events that he feels up to attend, this past weekend I was quite surprised when we both went ‘all in’ at SunServe’s Garden and Hat party.  Creating crazy looking bonnets is not something that we do on a regular basis, yet we had a great time together shopping, creating and wearing ‘those’  hats on Sunday.

The Mad HattersWhile we did not win the crazy hat contest,  the weekend event reminded me that bonding over something that is fun is essential  for both of us.  If you’re a caregiver like me, I am sure you get caught up in the daily routine of making sure everything is prefect for your caree.

The past few months, ‘The Little One’ has been blessed with more good days than bad,  for which we are both grateful. Yet to  ‘Be A Healthy Caregiver’ it is essential to find those times when we can take our mind off of things that we cannot control (cancer), and have fun with something that we can control (crazy hats).  Letting go of control can be hard, yet in those bonding moments, there is a sense of freedom that for a moment, helps take all our worries away.  Come to think about it…having one less worry  in our day, helps us us find that elusive balance in our lives that we so constantly strive to achieve.

Communities of One?

Roads that appear smooth can turn bumpy on a moment’s notice.  That happened to us this weekend as ‘The Little One’ experienced some ‘bumps in the road’ with his esophagus.  There has been so much smooth sailing over the past month or so that the events of this weekend took us by surprise.  We take so much for granted in life, and expect our systems to run without a problem.  Since the diagnosis of esophageal   cancer in August, we have learned that food can be a funny thing.  There is no rhyme or reason why one form of food has more difficulty passing the ‘bump in the road’ in his esophagus more so than another does.  It just happens.

While the three instances this weekend were alarming, they reminded us that no matter how good we might feel, there is  always an issue lurking around the corner.  I am happy to report that as of Sunday night and moving into Monday, ‘The Little One’ is doing well and there has been no problems with the esophagus. These episodes take quite a bit out of us simply because of the unknown.  While the food pass ‘the bump in the road’…when is the right time to call 911?  It is a delicate balance and sometimes you just have to hope and pray the you make the right decision.

As I write about our weekend, I started to think about a man who I met through my work at SunServe Social Services.   This gentleman lives independently at Continuing Care Retirement facility and while there appears to be loads of activities,  he feels “on the outside looking in’ because as an LGBT Senior, his living environment is not sensitive to the needs of LGBT Seniors.

Some people might ask…Just what are the needs of an LGBT Seniors?

If you have to ask that question, then I think the best reference for you would be The LGBT Aging Center report on Language and LGBT Housing: Making Models that Fits all Housing.

Aging in America is difficult enough; LGBT Aging is two-fold.   Think of it this way…As a kid every one of us had that awkward moment where we felt like we did not belong, we stood out in a crowd, or felt  left our by a group.  Today, across America, LGBT Seniors have those  same feelings and emotions we had as kids when they are thrust in facilities that are not sensitive to their needs.  Imagine trusting your care to someone who dislikes you for who you are…Remember Nurse Rachett?

Thinking about this gentleman  lead me to think…”what could be possibly be worse”… Living alone or living in a community where you are alone?

 [polldaddy poll=6145755]

While society is changing, we have a long way to go before there is acceptance. Overtime…with proper training, logical conversation, while using  active listening skills, change does happen!

Photo Credit: Free Digital Photos (he should be wearing a bow-tie)

I am happy to be associated with an organization like SunServe Social Services   who provides ongoing organizational consultation to help companies, organizations and service providers  in becoming more LGBT competent through policy and procedures alignment with best practices for LGBT care.  It is through awareness and sensitivity training where we step outside our comfort zone and learn that there are other ways at looking at life is making a difference in our community.

Sure, my plans for this past weekend took a major detour as I had to make some adjustments in my life to care for the one that I love.  But isn’t that what life is all about?  What I was supposed to do this weekend was important, but as a caregiver, I am on call 24-7 and sometimes you have to weigh what actually is  important in life.

While we are secure in our relationship and know that these ‘bumps in the road’ are going to happen from time to time, I am left to  wonder about all those other ‘little-ones’ out there who have to fend for themselves in a system that is not accepting of them: I wonder about all those frail seniors who live alone just looking for someone to have a conversation with on a daily basis.   I wonder about all those seniors who live in a community, yet feel like they are alone.   Being alone in a community has to be the worst feeling anyone could ever experience in life.

Let it be our goal that there will never be a community of one!

You, see…We might have cancer, but cancer does not have us!
