The Caregiving Hour With Kim Linder

BHC_fb

I am excited to be a guest on The  Caregiver Hour  radio show hosted  Kim Linder, founder of Senior Holistic Living and creator of The New Age of Caregiving Symposium on Monday August 5th at 11:00 am (est)

There are Four Ways to Listen (For questions, call 877-897-8255)

  • On the Radio:
11AM to 12PM EST Mondays on
Clear Channel 1250 AM WHNZ Impact Radio in Tampa

TCH_listenliveKim’s  aim is to support caregivers by providing encouragement, advice and helpful resources. Recognizing that many caregivers want to be authentic while setting healthy boundaries, Kim seeks to guide them towards a place of purposeful wisdom. A place where they can look at the big picture and make conscious decisions rather than reacting to the fear and panic that often set in after someone in their life falls, becomes ill, or experiences another type of crisis.

Focused on everything from the practical daily responsibilities to the emotional hard-to-discuss issues that caregivers face, The Caregiver Hour is a valued resource for primary and secondary caregivers. So whether you’re regularly caring for someone, or providing relief and support to a caregiver who is, this show will guide your path in a way that’s accessible, engaging, and most of all, useful to those in need.

Denise Brown, Caregiving.com

It is not often someone get’s to celebrate a 17th birthday twice, but that is what is going on today with Denise Brown at Caregiving.com! Denise registered CareGiving.com seventeen years ago on August 3rd; Denise and her website continue to offer soothing support, wonderful direction for a host of family Caregivers that instantly become your extended family.  Denise has been a mentor to many Caregivers and always, I MEAN ALWAYS, is there to lend her support, wisdom and care.

There are an estimated 66 million family caregivers just in the United States.  Caregiving is about collaboration, not about competition. Each family Caregiver has their own Caregiving journey story to tell, yet it is through those stories where Caregivers connect with each other, understand each other, are there for each other.  Denise Brown and Caregiving.com is a perfect example of this philosophy.

Take the time to visit Denise at Caregiving.com by simply clicking here! You’ll find Denise as an author, keynote speaker, radio show host and a friend to many.  But what you will really find without evening knowing it, is that gentle  guide and support that every caregiver needs while on their journey from someone who really does care.

I found Caregiving.com two years ago when I started to write about my Caregiving Journey and have not looked back since.  Denise has encouraged me to find my voice through blogging, and my weekly radio show; my life has been changed for the better by Denise and my extended family of Caregivers on Caregiving.com   Your life will be changed too by visiting Caregiving.com!  Stop by today or anytime this week and wish  Denise another 17th birthday and see what she has in store for everyone during her birthday celebration!

Elder Care Mediation

BHC_fb

Join us Tuesday, July 30th at 1:00 pm (EST) for a conversation with  Doris Haas and Bonnie Pará from Elder Care Mediation.  Doris and Bonnie are both Florida Supreme Court Mediators with extensive experience in senior care. To listen to our show live, simply click here!

Families are complex entities, and it is not unusual for submerged anger or conflict to boil up in times of stress. Siblings can often find it difficult to work together to help their aging parents, especially when there is unresolved conflict between them.  It can feel impossible to think about being together to make decisions regarding the well-being of their parents. Hence the need for Elder Care Mediation!

Elder Care Mediation

Our episode on Tuesday will surround the importance of Elder Care Mediation and why having an objective third person involved in the process is beneficial to everyone. Through our conversation with Doris and Bonnie, we will all learn how to ‘Be A Healthy Caregiver!’

A Sugar That Is Good For Your Teeth?

BHC_fb

I think it is safe to say that for many of us, going to the dentist can be one of the least favorite things to do.  As a kid growing up in the 60’s, I never have forgotten that horrible taste of  fluoride, nor those bulky metal clamps with the cotton swabs attached to the jaw, yikes…those were the days!

America’s Dental Hygienist, Shirley Gutkowski

Recently, I had the privilege of interviewing America’s Dental Hygienist, Shirley Gutkowksi on ‘Be A Healthy Caregiver’ on Blog Talk Radio. Shirley is a career dental hygienist and a champion of Minimally Invasive dental hygiene. Her outlook is years ahead of the leading edge and has proven staying power.  Shirley has written  a series of articles on oral care for Diabetes Self-Management. Shirley knows teeth…Just look at her great smile!

With the advances in medicine, there has been tremendous advances in dentistry too.  Having good dental hygiene is paramount to controlling other potential health calamities, especially in seniors.  Yet there was one product that Shirley mentioned that really threw me for a loop, Xylitol.  Using Xylitol or as Shirley calls the product, “magical sugar’ reduces the amount of “bio mass’ on the teeth.  By reducing  one’s ‘bio mass’ on teeth can decrease the occurrences of:

One of the other benefits of using Xylitol is that it often helps with hydration, which we know is critical to  everyone good health and well-being!

As Caregivers, we know that sometimes it can be difficult to take your Caree to the dentist, especially when you and your Caree might be struggling with Dementia or Parkinson’s.  Shirley suggests:

  • Schedule appointment during a time of day when you know your car will respond well
  • Inform your dental hygienist prior to your appointment of the state of your Caree’s teeth so the proper amount of time can be scheduled for proper cleaning
  • Be proactive in your Caree’s dental hygiene

In order to ‘Be A Healthy Caregiver‘ we have to be open to new experiences.  Sometimes that means thinking outside the box and our comfort zone.  Today’s dentistry is nothing like it was when I was a kid, so our thought process has to be different, too.  I never thought I would ever hear a dental hygienist use the word sugar and teeth cleaning in the same sentence; but I did this week  and learned about a new product that can help everyone!

Listen to Shirley on Cross Links Radio, simply click here!

After some research on Xylitol I found:

Xylitol’s preventive and therapeutic benefits

  • Helps prevent tooth decay by reducing plaque formation
  • Blocks the acids that demineralize tooth enamel
  • Halts the growth of acid producing bacteria
  • Reduces gingival inflammation
  • Has a glycemic level of 7, which does not trigger an insulin reaction in the body, making it useful for diabetics
  • Has 40% fewer calories than sugar.
  • Raises the pH level to be more alkaline
