When The Caregiver Becomes Ill

BHC_fb

You must do things you think you cannot do.  Eleanor Roosevelt

I love that quote from Eleanor Roosevelt; I wonder if she had Caregivers in mind when she spoke those lovely words? Caregivers often find themselves in impossible positions balancingPr_102_-_TRI_-_22_12_10_-_043 work, life along with Caregiving responsibilities.  Sometimes our Caregiving Cape does wear out, we are only human, even if sometimes we think that we’re not!  This past week, my Caregiving Cape took its turn on the sidelines as I became the Caree.  Stricken with Strep Throat, I was down and out for the count.  I’ve been blessed throughout my life with very few health calamities, but this illness through both of us for the loop.

ID-10014937 My first concern this week was for ‘The Little One’ as we both know that Strep Throat can be highly contagious.  We took every precaution we could possibility think of while staying as far apart from each other was we could.  One of his great lines this week was, “if I end up getting what you have, just drop me off at the hospital!”  I could see the concern in his eyes!  Even when I was ‘down and out’ my thoughts were always with him.  Then TLO finally said, ‘When are you going to take better care of yourself!’  Not being the one who gets sick, his comments hit me square in the eye.

When one becomes concerned about everything else but self, one tends to get ill, physically, mentally, spiritually.  It’s that good approach to holistic health that we all strive for in our busy caregiving day, but can be so elusive when we get lost. I know, I’ve been there!  While I’ve taken the steps to deal with my weight gain (14 lbs. eliminated!) I recognize after this past week that now it is time for me to get my embrace a holistic approach to good health and spirituality which is comprehensive of my needs.  This past week has been a great wake-up call for me.  To ‘Be A Healthy Caregiver’ means to embrace all components in life, not just a select few.

As a Caregiver, we are often planning doctors appointments, transportation, meals, you name is, we plan it.  But I have to wonder, do we have a plan for when we get sick?  One of the ‘TLO’s’ concerns this week was simply what happens to me if you get sick?  Having a plan in place, (and a back up plan to the first one, too!) is imperative to obtaining a piece of that holistic approach to good health and spirituality.  Many friend will tell you when you discuss a plan,  ‘don’t worry, call me at a moments notice  and I will be there.’  However a plan that is not written down on a piece of paper, then confirmed by all participants, is worthless.

043My plan this weekend is to make sure that all our plans are in place so that both of us can rest assured when I am not in service.   I would be interested to know what plans you have in place to help deal with the onset of illness when you’re a Caregiver?

You see…We Might Have Cancer, But Cancer Does Not Have Us!

My 90 Day Weight Loss Challenge

BHC_fb

I’ve had it with my excuses; I’ve had it with feeling lousy; I am in control of my own destiny!  This Yo-Yo weight gainweight loss has to stop, who is the one that can do this…ME, only ME.  Do I need encouragement, yes I do!

08_11

254 lbs as of 8/11/2013

We are 90 days out from our 1st Annual Care Cruise and I want to fit into the most meaningful piece of clothing that I own, my Purple Jacket.

003

The ‘Real’ Purple Jacket

There really is a Purple Jacket and as evident by the picture about and the picture below

The Purple Jacket

Circa 2006

The Purple Jacket signifies a beautiful time in my life while caring for my friend Father Richard Orlando.  Prior to taking on the role of his Caregiver, I worked hard to lose 100lbs. The purchase of ‘The Purple Jacket’ was totally out of character for me because I would never have worn something like that when I was so heavy.  Now, it simply does not fit!

The pictures tell the story, the round and bloated face is reappearing…

Caregivers often lose sight of themselves while in their role of Caregiver.  While that is a common trait, the one person who wants you to take good care of yourself is the person you are caring for!  I know that is what is prevalent in my home, how about yours?

As much as I want to swirl  my Caregiving Cape (admit it, you know you have a Caregiving Cape, too!)  I can’t bring Father Orlando back, nor can I take away TLO’s esophageal cancer; but I can control how I feel, what I say and what I do to make myself healthy.  I owe is to myself…Imagine that a Caregiver taking care of themselves!

So here is the plan…

  • Eat Less > Move More
  • No more processed food
  • No more power eating
  • Healthy Mind Set
  • Work with my trainer David Levison
  • No more excuses
  • Chart food intake and exercise on My Fitness Pal
  • No more eating out
  • No more short cuts
  • Walk, Bike Ride, or Swim every day
  •  Connect Body, Mind and Spirit

Where You Can Help…

  • Encourage Me
  • Challenge Me
  • Be With Me
  • Join Me
  • Follow my progress on my blog
  • Join us on our Caregiving Cruise by clicking here

The first few days this week I am going on a ‘cleanse’ by getting the toxins out of my body with lots of water, fruits and exercise.  In fact, as soon as I hit the publish button, I am going for a walk with my new shoes!

Shoes on the left are from the time when I lost 100lbs

I want to be able to wear my Purple Jacket on our Care Cruise in November…but most of all, I want to be fit both mentally and physically for my own well-being.  In order to ‘Be A Healthy Caregiver’  we have to take care of yourself, too!  I’ve dropped the ball over the past few months, but now I am ready to go.  Fr. Orlando said to be before he died, ‘Do not put that weight back on!’

It’s time to make it happen and the e only one who can make this happen is me.  If I can learn to take care of myself as well as I take care of TLO, I will be in tip-top shape before I know it!

You see, we might have Cancer, But Cancer Does Not Have Us!

Families are complex entities, and it is not unusual for submerged anger or conflict to boil up in times of stress. Siblings can often find it difficult to work together to help their aging parents, especially when there is unresolved conflict between them.  It can feel impossible to think about being together to make decisions regarding the well-being of their parents. Hence the need for Elder Care Mediation!

Elder Care Mediation

Our episode on Tuesday will surround the importance of Elder Care Mediation and why having an objective third person involved in the process is beneficial to everyone. Through our conversation with Doris and Bonnie, we will all learn how to ‘Be A Healthy Caregiver!’

A Sugar That Is Good For Your Teeth?

BHC_fb

I think it is safe to say that for many of us, going to the dentist can be one of the least favorite things to do.  As a kid growing up in the 60’s, I never have forgotten that horrible taste of  fluoride, nor those bulky metal clamps with the cotton swabs attached to the jaw, yikes…those were the days!

America’s Dental Hygienist, Shirley Gutkowski

Recently, I had the privilege of interviewing America’s Dental Hygienist, Shirley Gutkowksi on ‘Be A Healthy Caregiver’ on Blog Talk Radio. Shirley is a career dental hygienist and a champion of Minimally Invasive dental hygiene. Her outlook is years ahead of the leading edge and has proven staying power.  Shirley has written  a series of articles on oral care for Diabetes Self-Management. Shirley knows teeth…Just look at her great smile!

With the advances in medicine, there has been tremendous advances in dentistry too.  Having good dental hygiene is paramount to controlling other potential health calamities, especially in seniors.  Yet there was one product that Shirley mentioned that really threw me for a loop, Xylitol.  Using Xylitol or as Shirley calls the product, “magical sugar’ reduces the amount of “bio mass’ on the teeth.  By reducing  one’s ‘bio mass’ on teeth can decrease the occurrences of:

One of the other benefits of using Xylitol is that it often helps with hydration, which we know is critical to  everyone good health and well-being!

As Caregivers, we know that sometimes it can be difficult to take your Caree to the dentist, especially when you and your Caree might be struggling with Dementia or Parkinson’s.  Shirley suggests:

  • Schedule appointment during a time of day when you know your car will respond well
  • Inform your dental hygienist prior to your appointment of the state of your Caree’s teeth so the proper amount of time can be scheduled for proper cleaning
  • Be proactive in your Caree’s dental hygiene

In order to ‘Be A Healthy Caregiver‘ we have to be open to new experiences.  Sometimes that means thinking outside the box and our comfort zone.  Today’s dentistry is nothing like it was when I was a kid, so our thought process has to be different, too.  I never thought I would ever hear a dental hygienist use the word sugar and teeth cleaning in the same sentence; but I did this week  and learned about a new product that can help everyone!

After some research on Xylitol I found:

Xylitol’s preventive and therapeutic benefits

  • Helps prevent tooth decay by reducing plaque formation
  • Blocks the acids that demineralize tooth enamel
  • Halts the growth of acid producing bacteria
  • Reduces gingival inflammation
  • Has a glycemic level of 7, which does not trigger an insulin reaction in the body, making it useful for diabetics
  • Has 40% fewer calories than sugar.
  • Raises the pH level to be more alkaline

‘Granny Suites’…How Cool Is That!

be-healthy

Tuesday on ‘Be A Healthy Caregiver’, I had the pleasure to visit with Hank and Henry Moseley from Home Care Suites.   To listen to our show, simply click here!

A recent PEWS survey indicated that almost half of the adults in the United States feel that at some time in their life, they will be caring for a parent or an adult member of their family.  When you take into consideration that there are over 44 million working family caregivers in the country, it goes without saying that we spend quite a bit of time caring!

Home Care Suites offers a unique option for Senior living by building custom tailored ‘Granny’ Suites ( I just love that description) right in the convenience of your own back yard.  The homes are cost and energy-efficient, while offering a technology package which provides safety and security for the entire family.

What attracted me to Home Care Suites was not only their quality product, or their excellent reputation, it was their ability to take a concept and make it work that is practical for everyone in a family!  Home Care Suites provides an excellent option for senior living which allows for autonomy, safety and cost efficiency.    And to top that off, you get the  personal attention from a Father/Son team that is not only experienced and knowledgeable, they understand what it means to ‘Be A Healthy Caregiver!’

Be sure to visit Home Care Suites on-line and check out all the wonderful options they offer in Senior living by simply clicking here!

Caregiving Can Change Your Heart

be-healthy

SuzannePerkins-140x178

Susan Perkins-Newman

Tuesday on ‘Be A Healthy Caregiver’  on Blog Talk Radio, I had the pleasure to visit with Suzanne Perkins-Newman, Founder and CEO of Answers For Elders.com.   Thrust into the role of Caregiver for her Mom at the height of her career,  Suzanne learned the importance of ‘living in my heart’ during her Caregiving journey.

Career focused and living life in the corporate world, Suzanne’s Caregiving journey provided her the opportunity to take a step back, “to be venerable”, “to be softer. ”  While living life in the reality of the care for her Mom, Suzanne’s Caregiving  changed her life in more ways than one.

Caregiving is not for the faint of heart; but Caregiving does change our heart!  Being entrusted with the care of another human being is one of the greatest honors that can be bestowed on another person.  While we caring-for-caregiverare in the midst of Caregiving, it may be difficult to see the importance of our role.  Sleepless nights, constant worry, loss of one’s individuality are just a sample of what Caregivers often feel during their Caregiving journey.   However, knowing that we are providing  a beautiful sunset to one’s life, will far outweigh the day-to-day challenges we face as a Caregiver. caring hands

By combining her business knowledge and the passion Suzanne has in her heart, Suzanne created Answers For Elders.com.  I have no doubt that Suzanne’s endeavor will be a success and come to think about it, I’m sure Suzanne has always had a good and gentle heart!
